Mainstream take
No longer underground. GQ named their shampoo bar Best Overall โ€” a signal that Church California has broken through into mainstream grooming culture. Now a full lifestyle brand: hair, skincare, deodorant, merch. Sold at Credo Beauty. The violet glass and the botanical origin story have become recognizable. Growth hasn't visibly changed the product โ€” the formulation philosophy and violet glass preservation remain consistent across new lines.

Community take
Loyal customers describe a genuine difference from anything else on the natural market โ€” not just "free from" bad ingredients but actively healing. The expansion into skincare feels earned rather than opportunistic. The glass swap (SWAP) program lets you return your violet glass jars for recycling, which community members cite as a rare show of genuine commitment.

Critical take
Expensive across every category โ€” hair, skin, and deodorant. The barbershop is San Francisco-only. Expanding into skincare and deodorant means more SKUs to maintain at the same quality standard, which is a real operational challenge for a small brand. Worth watching whether the formulation depth that made the hair products exceptional carries over.
"She was shocked to find the products in my bathroom โ€” reading the ingredient lists slack-jawed. A look of horror on her face, she seemed surprised I could still be alive."
Ryan Gonzalez โ€” on meeting Beatrice, and the moment that started everything
The story

On June 7th, 2012, Ryan Gonzalez met Beatrice at a bar in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. He didn't know it then, but that night was also the beginning of Church California. Beatrice had grown up with a mother who made everything at home โ€” soap, toothpaste, cleaning products. She had never used a synthetic product in her life. When she saw what was in Ryan's bathroom, she was horrified.

That moment became the premise of a business. In 2017, Ryan and Beatrice opened Church Barber in Hayes Valley, San Francisco โ€” the world's first botanical barbershop. Every product used on clients was plant-made, chemical-free, and formulated by Beatrice. The talc powder used in conventional barbershops, a known carcinogen, was replaced with arrowroot powder, kaolin clay and crushed dried flowers. The synthetic aftershave was replaced with neroli water. Passersby were drawn in by the smell of plant oils drifting through the door.

The product line โ€” Church California โ€” grew from the barbershop's needs. Beatrice developed each formula around a specific mission of hair and scalp health, not just styling. Every ingredient was chosen for its healing properties. And to preserve the raw, living formulas without chemical preservatives, they landed on something almost no one else in grooming uses: imported violet glass from Europe, which blocks damaging light while allowing ultraviolet and infrared rays to flow through, keeping fragile botanical ingredients intact.

Church Barber has since been named Best Barbershop in America by BestLifeOnline and The World's Best Grooming Destination by the Financial Times. The products are sold at Credo Beauty. And it all started because Beatrice read an ingredient label in Ryan's Brooklyn bathroom and couldn't believe what she saw.

Brandfindr verdict

Church California is what happens when a person with real convictions about ingredients meets someone who knows how to build a beautiful business around them. The origin story is genuine โ€” Beatrice's horror at Ryan's bathroom products wasn't a marketing moment, it was the beginning of a years-long project to prove that plant-made grooming could outperform synthetic alternatives.

The brand has since expanded well beyond hair โ€” skincare collections organized around cleansing, hydrating and protecting, a plastic-free cedar deodorant, and a merch line. The violet glass preservation carries across all of it. Worth noting: the SWAP program lets customers return empty violet glass jars to be recycled and reused, which is a genuinely unusual commitment from a small brand.

The honest caveat is accessibility โ€” expensive across every category, barbershop is San Francisco only, and the expansion raises a legitimate question about whether the formulation depth that made the hair products exceptional can be maintained across skincare and deodorant. Early signs suggest yes. For anyone building a values-aligned personal care routine, Church California is one of the real ones.
